The story begins with the Once-ler, who came to this land one day in the past. The Once-ler lowers the Whisper-ma-Phone and begins telling the story although it is difficult to hear his strange voice over the phone.

There are houses everywhere on this hill, with lights shining out of them all through the night. The streets are lit up at night, and thereРІР‚в„ўs a spooky feeling about the place. The Lorax begins in a post-apocalyptic setting, where the town is surrounded by barren hills. He didnРІР‚в„ўt want the Lorax or any other creature in his forest to suffer anymore because of him. This was the last of the tree seeds, so now he had to make sure that things got better for everyone. The Once-ler then took his last Truffula seed and gave it to a boy. He sends his relatives away and leaves only a pile of stones carved with the word РІР‚СљUNLESS.РІР‚Сњ The Once-ler finally chops down the last Truffula tree, and his business shuts down. He does so each time with remorse because he knows what he did was wrong, but then continues to expand his business anyway. The Lorax forces him to see that his factory has ruined the environment and polluted it, which is why he must send away the Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee Swans, and Humming Fish. The Lorax arrives at the Once-lerРІР‚в„ўs door with various animals in tow. He hires all of his relatives and chops more Truffula trees. He is ignored by the Once-ler and continues chopping them down for his Thneed business.

The softness of the tufts of the Truffula trees captured him, so he decided to chop one down to make a Thneed out of its tuft.Р”Р„fter the first cut, we are introduced to a small creature who objects to cutting down trees. The valley was pure and clean with life teeming throughout it. He first arrived at a beautiful forest of Truffula trees and many interesting animals. He arrives at the tall, winding house of the Once-ler and pays him for his story. The Once-ler aggressively yells at the Lorax while driving him backwards down a staircase.The Lorax opens as a young boy walks down the street of an empty town. This scene is slightly bizarre, and may frighten small children, as the music is also loud and strange. There's a musical scene where the Once-Ler is portrayed as a giant man destroying the forest and scaring the animals away.

While the resulting scene with the Lorax giving him CPR is mainly handled comically, it may be confusing to some younger viewers who are not familiar with the first aid concept, and also may be unsettling to watch due to its slight tension and the urgency of the situation. The Once-Ler almost dies after being thrown from a waterfall to a nearby bank. The Once-Ler's bed is put in a river while he's sleeping in it - an intense scene follows depicting the Once-Ler in a very dangerous situation, culminating in him almost falling down a waterfall, which may be frightening to some viewers.
